Man you sure said alot, I can't help you with your question on the l, but have you seen the new C-62's they carry alot of the same design as the l series and they are a newer bigger conventional made by Agco-Gleaner. Curt

Wish I had known of your affection for a 72 l2. Just sent one to the boneyard. lets remember, I owned one.... Hmmmm Auto header control that lowered all the time - fix kit, Pitman type FCB -ouch, feeder beater that had the finger, holders upgraded four times, thresher raddle that didn't, updates on shaker systems, fans, and oh that splitter!!!!! Brakes that tried to work, hydros of foreign origin that came in full of metal shavings,,,A Simms fuel pump that didn't most of the time -roosa to the rescue - and can you say DIODESIJ I spent about 100 hours updating and upgrading and rewireing a 1000 hour beast just to prove to a customer who bet me I couldn't make it through a crop with one. I ran it from 78 to 81. Sold it to a customer and he ran it for another 4 yrs. This was the first attempt at a radical new design for Gleaner and set a new standard for all combines - and after debuggin it; proved the design worked,,, lets see electric over hydraulic system and electric clutches -- now when was it industry leader, way of life, combine got that big lever out of the floorIJIJ d:)

About this 1972 Model l...well, I never did say it was a saint--in fact, quite the opposite! You are right, and I've either experienced or witnessed just about every thing that could possibly go wrong with this combine. Actually, I am surprised to find that ANY even survived the on-farm harvest, let alone, the harvest run. I know of many that did not. In fact, as much as I do love combines, I can see the merciful killng of a 1972 l an act of kindness. Still, for those few that were more the exception than the rule, I want to see the original l for what it IS, rather than what it isn't. You are right about the l pioneering the technology of push buttons, EM_hydraulics, etc. This alone makes at least the better specimens of such worthy of historic preservation.
