Combines Self destructing STS

Be sure that Deere hears about this one. Having the combine get busted up is one thing, but this turned into a safety deal. If it is indeed true that pieces penetrated the cab I would be more concerned about having that problem checked into than the rotor assembly being tore up. Don't get the wrong opinion here, none of this should have happened with a new combine. But this turned into a situation that deals with the well-being of the operator, one that was totally unaware of what could have happened.

A friend of mine ran a rock half the size of bowling ball through his 1680 last fall. Rotor, concave, and rotor cage all DESTROYED. When all said and done, about 13,000 was the costs of damage. like you he didn't see the rock go in either. But he said when he hit it the machine jumped about 2 feet off the ground and locked up tighter than a drum.

I would be questioning quality of this rotor and all of them for it to just fly apart is scary. From what I know the rotor usually grinds up the rock but it shouldn't come apart if something else hits it. From what was said the operator came away with his life but almost paid the price of poor engineering.

We run a STS combine as will. We like the machine very much.I had about a half a dozen rocks caught in the trap in this year. Did you clean your stone trap on a daily base"s IJ Good IN FO.

Dear lucky - I run case I.H. axial flow combines and repair them. For one thing I can't see how any rock larger than a softball can even get past the feeder chain. Next if it does there is an excellant rock trap in the case I. H . machine. That will catch it. J.D . also has a rock trap. last but not least Case I.H. has an auto feeder cut off safety device that should stop the feeder within five seconds of any foreign object entering the feeder house. You should ask J.D. if they have this feature also.

We get so many rocks during bean harvest that we just leave the rock trap door open and the rocks roll right on through.
