Combines separator grate cover

First we heard of or tried was about '96 (just before starting to extend cylinder bars and feeder shocks). Custumer had trouble holding as much barley as he would like to. He had as many as eight reverse bars in that 72 which killed his capacity and didn't help as much as he wished. We then talked to Gleaner and they suggested the Aussie wheat kit. This dried up his loss and he removed most or all of the reverse bars. We then tried for edible beans and green sunflowers which only helped and never hurt. We then installed quite a few covers over the years and then started to just weld wires on top of every other wire in seperator grate to help prevent rolling straw in toughest conditions. We also got loewen to build a seperator grate replacement made of cage material and then cage would stay at same diameter. I hear guys in green milo also reduce loss with covers on or cage material seperator grate. I can only imagine the seperator grate rolls straw in the conditions where straw is resistant to slide not to mention breaking corn cobs. We no longer install covers or raise the wires as long as we have installed rotor sweeps. We also order the machines with high wide wire seperator grate which surely reduces chances of excess rolling of tough straw. Pluging the holes exposed from pulling all wires to get ready for seperator grate covers was a major pain so we looked for alternative. Seems to me we have all the concave or grate material we should ever need on thresher side of P3. I think I'd rather see half the concave on thresher side (like P1s) and then half the seperator grate and keep it adjustable. I don't know for they are working very good in a great variey of crops and conditions the way we have them set up these days but always looking for more. It would be fun to have the time to get into a contest one time to go from super light grass seeds to beans to corn with nothing more than adjustments. Maybe someday. Have a good one.
