Combines Shaft rebuildsIJ

Right after we bought our N5 the header drive brgs locked up on the pivot shaft and twisted the end off. After looking at it close saw that someone had already welded it once.I believe the heat made it soft which caused it to twist off instead of spin. That might not be a problem every time.I would rather fill the low spot with something that doesn't heat the shaft all the way through and do it slow.Maybe braze a little at a time.

I used to run the older orange corn heads and they would spin bearings on the rear of snapping roll shafts.I had some brazed and turned down and I took some to another machine shop and I think he tig welded them and the turned them down,I think he even fixed a few on the front of one old head where the needle bearing ran.I never had any trouble with ether one,but the tig welded shafts looked better and where stonger than the soft brass repairs.Be sure to use lock Tight stud and bearing mount when you install the new bearings.

My dad has done that with the shafts on his C2. Fill in the void with brazing rod and then grind down on 10" grinder by hand. It was slow but worked and was cheaper than a new shaft. We now have a lathe and fill in with he wire welder then turn down on the lathe. Jason
