Combines SHIVVERS DRYERS

I have seeen many farmers start with drying bins and then move up to shivvers. The thing is almost to a person the end up at the same place, a corn dryer. Buy a corn dryer twice as big as you think you need and you will be a happy guy. If you are tight for money buy an mand w pto dryer . They are iexpensive and dry a lot of corn for the money. Wiring is very expensive for a dryer and grain set up. There are a lot of options I would, get a dryer.

I have used one for 20 years. My system was put up in the 70's for soybeans,it was the small system with one floor sweep,6" verticle auger and 4" transfer. In the 80's we updated the burners and put a computer on it but as combines got bigger it was too slow. This year we finally updated. Put two floor sweeps , 8" center verticle and 6" transfer auger.I started at about 20% moisture and couldn't dump it in the bin fast enough. It kept up real good for me. Of course I'm not trying to set any combining records. Next year I'm going to put a higher speed belt on my leg and put a bigger dump auger and probably start at 23-24% moisture. This will put a little more pressure on the system. We'll see !!! If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. Tim

I have one. It works okay but just like this guy said. get one two times bigger than you need. get the 8 inch unloaders twin sweeps and two heaters or put up two drier bins. I can out run my drier in 120 bushel corn in one day of running but this year it was even worse due to 180-190 bushel corn it had just about ground me to a halt some weeks. yes I said weeks. So go bigger than you think you need. later Will

Sorry to post under here, but I can't start a new post on the John Deere site. I've got a question from a neighbor about corn settings on a 9600. They do not have a corn concave in and would like to know the ball park settings as to reduce cobs in tank. Corn is for feed only, but would like to have pretty clean sample. Thanks Kirk

I have to agree with the others, on going twice what you think you need, and using a corn dryer. We are using 3 shivvers systems 2 singel sweeps and 6" and one 2 sweep and 8" vertical. Wear is a big issue, they do a good job on drying corn, we do sometimes run a little wetter han some (28-30%) on ocasion, our big system is a 36' dryer transfering to a 48' 50000 bu bin and we can count on replacing both sweeps in two years, you can get a third out of them but youll have problems, and parts are EXPENSIVE blue paint must not be cheap.

How many bushels are you running through your systemIJ We have a shivers single sweep_6in vert system that we installed 10+yrs ago. Only thing thats really worn out was the boot at the bottom of the vertical transfer, no other issues apart from regular greasing and maintence. Have run 35-50,000 bu_yr through it over the last 10+ years.

The screw seams to wear down quick in the center of bin, and leaves a high spot in the center, which reduces air flow and causes drying problems.
