Combines sieves plugging with dust

Hi hunter, I got done today. Finally. I did do milo last. I noticed the same dust when I was cutting last week, It was in later planted milo, the stems and head were not dry yet. After a good freeze earlier this week, then waited a day or so to get back to it. The red dust went away. As far as dealing with the dust, I tried putting more air to the sieves but I created another problem of blowing seed out the back. And it all still did not go away. It is heavy enough to drop right on down to the clean grain elevator. I never considered the pam trick, The problem I would see with pam would be that it is a greasy substance and I would think it would catch more dust than would slide off. Spray on graphite would be a thought, but the texture would be kind of rough. Would it not also hold the dust up from sliding outIJ Then there is spray silicon. You would have to wait for it to dry, but I think it would wear off rather quickly. It makes me wonder if the plastic sieves would be worth a try when that time comes to replace them. BUT would they generate static electricity with a bunch of dust flowing over themIJ Creating a dust magnetIJ I apologize I am not much help. This was the first year I noticed this much of the red dust. But for us it did not last long enough to delv deeply into the issue. I lived with it for a day. I did realize it was in the Pioneer milo we had and not the Dekalb. I would be curious of others solutions incase I also run across this issue again.

When we used to cut milo, I remember my dad would have a wire brush attacted to long handle so he could reach in the back of the shoe and rub the dust off. I just remembered why I dont plant it now.

High humidity, certain varieties worse than others, certain years were a problem; there never was a predictable pattern to it. A freeze helps but doesn't mean it can't bother some. The bin loading auger would build up and begin shaking when it was to the point of needing to be scraped. I attached poly sheeting to the pan under the lower seive one year to to keep it from building up and stopping the milo from sliding to the auger. That worked. I guess I don't have a solution but I feel your pain. My best fix was short season corn.

That problem would have to be put in weird catagory. Only time we have had this is corn or sunflower harvest at or a few degrees below freezing. If sticking dust has left a rough finish I would believe you will have to wash and buff to get smooth again. I would likely then spray with slip plate if conditions have not changed enough to get rid of problem. Tube in bin will cake up just like you describe in edible beans if you have just enough wet beans to cause dust to start building up. At that time the unloader system will start building up as well (hate that when this happens). When clean grain starts slipping or auger starts jumping it would be high time to spin auger out and give it a cleaning. Best of luck
