Combines slotted or bar grates in wheat

With only 2 rows of Gorden Bars on front I run veins a little slower then the middle setting. If corn is 28- 30 % I run in slow position, that was with my Kuchar concaves. Thinking of getting rid of them and buying a set of round bar concaves. They are supposed to be really durable and have a good lip on the inside of them, will make crop tumble and seperate more in the concave area.

Usually in wheat I can run them in the middle. The Gorden bars do really help in tough threshing crops like hard red wheat. last year I ran with the front concave covered and 2nd half covered and the last one wide open, it was large wire. I had issues with rotor loss, that's why I'm trying a different configuration. What size combine do you run IJ

I think you are right about the concave being banded. last year I banded the front one because it was large wire and left the 2 rear open, they were small wire. I think if I run the set-up I was talking about previously, and use the slotted grates I will eliminate rotor loss. I have heard wheat is coming off tough in Essex. We figure we are about 2 weeks away here, so we will see what happens when we hit the field. We took off 400 acres of corn this spring so it seems like it was just yesterday when this thing was going up and down the field. I am in the Kitchener Waterloo area.

We have a 2166 and that is the set up that we use, 2small wire concaves 1large and slotted grates with a fixed air chaffer. Up here in Grey we are still 2 weeks away on wheat and about the same on winter canola

I have flat steel strips bolted to the outside of my slotted grates. Should it stay on the outside or should I bolt it to the inside. I should know this but the combine came with big heavy round bar grates and I have never used the slotted ones.
