I agree with tbran - length doesn't matter, girth does! Even up here in WI! We tried a smaller 2 1_4" OD and it helped some, but still had a few problems. 3" is perfect - we also cut a few acres of really short beans like you described - no problems with beans falling back off the front. I thing the problem with a smaller hose (and I'm talking about an 800 flex - others may have different diameter auger) is we could only bring our reel back to the point where it would hit the auger. The geometry just wasn't there to get those reel fingers close enough to that smaller hose like with the 3". We can lower reel to where the sickle would clip teeth, but because of the arc of the reel, it wasn't close enough to the hose just behind the cutterbar. Maybe a smaller hose would work on a 300 or 500, I don't know. Good luck!

Too much information, T. langan, just joking. Just a thought Gleaners have big balls dragging underneath the machine (I believe someone said that on a post a long time ago) and they have a 3" hose. lets see JD and CaseIH brag about that. Seriously though thanks for the info T. langan and the others. I needed some help convincing my dad since we just got done installing a 1 1_2" pipe (good thing it was free). I know I'll be the one cleaning out the feeder beater when it plugs after he finds out the smaller hose doesn't work. (lOl) Curt

lOl, Big balls and only a 3" hose. I suppose stranger things have happened! But seriously, I had to "convince" the Chief of the hose mod too - even though I was even a bit skeptical myself. But trust me, it works well. For the first time ever, beans were a joy to harvest - no worries when those short patches came! Only problem is the hydro lever would only go so far forward in 2nd gear! Take care!

I never made a statement about this! I did ask a few questions though... ;-)
