Small drums give more room under drum. I cannot see reason for large drum, but maybe someone could enlighten me. Perhaps in light crops or hard red winter wheat. But not in our area!

We order small drums front and rear. I don't care to much what the front has but I do prefer small in the rear. like Tim said it gives more room under drum. With the small drums you can allways shim top pad if you think there is too much room under chain. The difference from a small to large drum just isn't enough to make a difference in how the crop may bulldoze into it. I'd note what sizes you have in each machine and give it a try. I think the reason for offering both is some peoples resistant to change. They had small drums in front from plant until '98 when they went with the biggest. We never switched any of the big front drums with small. We switched a few of the back drums to smallest until offered that way from plant. My bet is they drop the optional drums someday and go with all small. Good luck
