Massey built the 540 along the same time frame as the 550 I think. The 550 was compairable to the old 510 and the 540 (witch was a piece of junk in my opinion) was about the same as the old 300.

I would guess the 540 would have been an update of the 410.

Although not technically Massey's, Massey research combines were and are sold in the U.S. for ag research purposes. They are built by Sampo in Finland and marketed under the Massey name by Kincaid Equipment, Haven KS. Go to kincaidequipment.com for a look at these cuties. In the 80's, I believe the smallest of these machines was the "8". It has now been updated to the "8xp". I own an 8xp, and it sports a whopping 7' table (5' is available for those less aggressive guys)and 2 row corn head. The cab is almost larger than the rest of the machine. Also built in the 80's were two larger machines, roughly the sizes of the 300 and 410. These have been updated and are still built. I own an '81 "16" (about the size of the 300) we use for research purposes.

Red Painter is right. The 540 had a 37 inch cylinder like the 410 and replaced it. It was not a replacement for the 300 that had a 30 inch cylinder. The 300 was completly phased out in 1977 when the 540 and 550 was introduced. The 540 was a very good small combine in my opinion. We farm 300 acers with a 1979 540. It has over 3000 hours on it and and is in the field running soybeans as I speak.
