Kirk, No question, replace the snapping roll blades! Normally what we see happen is the front 1 1_2"-2" of the blade wears and then you get a hesitation in the stalk making the transition of spiral to blade which will usually make the stalk go forward before it is pulled down and then of course the ear goes flying forward off the front of the head.(Unless you're driving fast enough to catch the ear!)This in turn gives you the ear picked look and $4-$10_acre head loss. Aftermarket blades run $125.00_row.(less than 200 acres and they will be paid for.) My opinion, Hyper Harvest II

Have found a guy in south central ne that rebuilt my spirals, deck plates and touched up the blades for under $550. Does a great job and appears like it will last along time.Has done many deere heads in the past. He said he was booked up for this year but it might be something to think about for next season. Can give name and number if interested.

I would replace the spirals and weld a bead on the first 3" or so of the snapping roll blades. Worn spirals are the cause of the stalks hesitating to get to the flutes. I've done this for years and seldom replace the flutes. If you can find someone to hard surface the bead on the flute, all the better. As for not shredding the stalks, I'm not sure new flutes will help. The last time, (and only time),I replaced the flutes I didn't see much difference in how the stalks were shredded.

His name is Charlie Menke from lawrence Ne. He told me he didn't have enough time to get to any more this season. His phone number is 402-756-7417. I will let you know how well the hard surface works. Someone told me it can make the spirals brittle.

I'd say spirals made a big difference on mine. Do them both (spirals and flutes) at the same time. It's alot more time and labor efficient while you have the whole corn head torn down. You will be pleased with the results.

If they are both worn replace both; you are not "saving" any money by running worn parts. That said, if you do choose one I say go for the sprials. I hate to disagree with Hyper Harvest II 'cause he is easily one of the most knowledgeable combine guys I know but I have to say on our farm sprials are way more important than the blades.
