Combines splits

Check the condition of your cylinder bars. In a food grade crop, you should have the black bars installed. They should be run in another crop to take the edges off before running in your high-value crop. I'll also ask a question for someone else to answer: Could this problem be helped by removing every other wire from the concaveIJ I know that this works well in food grade corn, but I would guess that it could cause threshing problems in beans.

Most 9000's in our area will split around 3% at 13% moisture. Skins and smears are usally caused by augers, dirt, fresh bars, etc. This depends on all the setttings, etc. 13% is getting dry, and the cylinder slow down kit should be used, I think it would get you down to 160 in low range - correct me if my memory is off. The beater grate should be down, the feeder chain on slow drive sprocket. and the concave can get set to just knock the bean out. May be something here will help, we are just starting wheat and the edibles are at lest a month away.

In the older combines if you remove the filler plates between the cylinder bars you will increase split soybeans. Simply reinstalling them can go from 25% splits down to 3% or below with no other changes to the machine. I didn't believe it would make such a huge difference so last fall I left my filler strips out after getting done with clover seed. It wasn't long before I was bolting them in. I have been told by most guys running 9X00 series that they cannot get the crop through unless they pull the fillers out. I don't see where there is such a difference between the older and later machines in the cylinder areas but nearly everyone I know with a newer machine has theirs standing in the shed corner. They do not even put them in to shell corn.
