Combines spreading chaff evenly

Check out the REM pneumatic chaff spreaders. They don't take up much room behind the combine and they have no spinning whirl-a-gigs and hydraulic problems.

Make sure that your accelerator rolls are in good shape and then turn up the wind on the machine. No way that the OEM spreader should have a problem with 18'. I ran an R50 with a 27' in wheat and it did a decent job spreading the chaff. Ed in Montana

On both the R-50 we used to run and now the R-52 that we have, we run a 24 foot header. The OEM fin type spreader does an excellent job of spreading chaff in both wheat and soybeans. like someone else said, turn the wind up as high as possible and the "blast" will send it out the back. I have also found that if I run the fins in the most down position, it spreads over the area behind the best. It blasts it at the ground hard enough that it actually continues to swirl out to the width of the header. The key is the high wind velocity.

I have seen some operators extend the lefthand fin (the one next to the curtain),so that it is the same length as the one on the right. Make sure it does not cause the curtain to contact the straw spreader. This helps the chaff spreader spread better to the lefthand side.
