Yes, the springs are to keep the hyd from overheating. A combine with no auto header height control has no springs. look for the "genie" outside the rh window. It has a rate of lower screw and hoses and a cable running to it. The separator beater can be removed. In fact some Fs were built without them. The beater fluffs the crop and helps separate grain from heavy or damp material other than grain.
