IF you had no power and then you jumped from the BATT side of the relay to the non grounded small terminal and the relay kicked in but would not with the key switch then you have a bad ignition switch. In emergency situations you should have connected the two BIG terminals together by placing both wires on the same terminal. Again this is only a emergency fix and to power down of course you will have to remove the nut and separate the wires. The wire also may have been getting hot because of a faulty relay pulling too many amps. The relay will run hot however, this is normal in a constant duty relay.
