Combines Straw chopper wear on STS combines

We didn't have choppers on our STS. But I tell you, if you think they had rocks running through they would have had to replace the concave and rotor pieces, too. Everybody I have heard talking running rocks or auger fingers through an STS had about a 10.000 to 15.000 Dollar repair bill. Just check for the new parts on them machines.

I guess that's the reason Deere went with plastic fingers on there grain platform cross augers. How well do the new fingers wearIJ

The plastic fingers seem to wear very well. I thought they were put on so if they accidently break and go thru the combine (STS) they won't do internal damage. They are suppose to fall inside the platform auger. We never had one break.

Rocks can make their way through these machines without causing enough damage to destroy everything. I've seen a couple of machines that had some really significant damage on the chopper knives, and the rest of the machine was not damaged to the degree that everyone talks about. I've wondered how much better the chopper would wear if it didn't have to eat every last bit of trash going out the back of the machine. I'd like to see Deere experiment with a configuration like they run on the conventional machines.
