we start with 1 1_8 in front and 1 1_4 in the rear, keeps cobs and stalks from jambing in the plates...hold your smaller ears to the plates to see how they measure up to the gap...1 1_8 and 1 1_4 is a very universal measurement in all corn heads...slowing down the snapping rolls will help butt shelling problem without plugging up the snapping rolls in higher yielding spots in the field.

We set the stripper plates slightly wider than the stalks. To narrow and it will "push" the corn in front of the head. Too wide and you will get a lot of ear shellage. We normally start out at 1 1_16"bottom and 1 1_8" top and adjust according to conditions. I make my in-field adjustments on one side only and always the same side. It's quicker than adjusting both sides and I always know what side to adgust to get back to original settings. I can't see where I am far enough off center of the stalk rolls to hurt.
