Combines Stripper vs draper

Firstly, I would take a look at why your current header is backfeeding at such relatively slow speeds. Your stipper plates across your header troughs backsheet, behind the auger, should be at a tolerance of no more than a "business card" thick. Improper stipper plates will cause exactly what you described. Also, if your header is of the vintage where the table auger can be replaced or updated with full-width retractible fingers, that is also a definite aid in straw feeding. Check those two items out before spending the money on a new head.

I demo'd a stripper head a few years back on some hailed out wheat. Worked good for that on a 9600. I have a neighbor who has run one in standing wheat and his opinion was that you couldn't beat it in high yielding wheat (70 bu.+),but in the 30-40 bu. wheat it did't perform as well. Seem's to work better with a wall of wheat ahead of it. Double cropping also works well behind them because the straw is left standing. My concern at the time of the demo was maintenance. I think there have been several improvements since. Shelborne is very good about bringing them out for demonstration. They brought a mechanic from a local dealer to help in making minor combine adjustments for the decrease in material handling.

WE RUN MACDON 962 AND 972'S THEY ARE MUCH MORE ECONOMCAl THAN STRIPPERS. THEY FEED EVEN IN ANY CROP, AND THEY WIll AllOW YOU TO INCREASE SPEED. STRIPPERS ARE HEAVY EXPENSIVE, AND THE STUBBlE IS HARD TO GET RID OF IF THE WHEAT IS OVER ABOUT 25 BU. WE HAVE AlSO USED A JD 930D and a 936D and they suck. they will not feed in heavy crop and are much too complicated for our liking.

We farm in sw Kansas and harvest around 3500 acres of wheat, all cut with stripper headers. We love them, in 10-40 bu. wheat with the 9600's we run our ground speed between 6 and 7.5 mph. In 40-75 bu wheat and a 9600 we can run from 4.5-5.5 and up to 6.5 with the sts machines. In 75+ wheat with either machines we have never run under 3 mph. 110 bu wheat and a 9650 walker machine was running 3.3 with minimal loss. The mant. is very minimal also, we figure about $.50 to $.75 per acre. Grain quality is supurb, in the 75+ bu. wheat that is dry and heavy that we harvest in the middle of the afternoon for seed wheat never gets ran through a seed wheat cleaner, it goes strait to the drills.
