When the STS first came out, an engineer told me if you only do a small number of acres of wheat that "You can get by" with the inserts with the round bar concave. "If you have very many acres, you won't be happy". I have a neighbor who does get by but has a hard time getting out whitecaps-this is spring wheat in NE SD. I really think you should run the small grain concaves with covers on the first three bars- thats what I do. last year we cut Winter wheat that averaged 100 bu (80 to 140bu going through the field) at 3 1_2 mph with a 9650 STS and 32' stripper. We cut a quarter of spring wheat that was standing good that made 85 bu at 5 1_2 mph. John Deere has a service bulliten out that tells the other changes you need to make on the STS to get maximum capacity out of your machine.Hope this helps.
