Combines Swivel vs Turret Unloading Auger

I have never ran a turret but have talked to a farmer who has and he liked the extra clearance of the turret when dumping into a grain cart on the go but also said that if he got too close to the cart on rough ground it didn't do much good to swing the auger back where as the swivel auger would go up and back away from the cart in a similar situation.

Besides the obvious clearance advantage on the turret while unloading on the go on rough ground, the turret uses 22 hp to operate while the swivel type uses only 14 hp. Swivel has no right angle gearboxes or double flighted auger to damage grain. Now, here is something to ponder - the highest point of clearance of the swivel unloader is exactly the same as the highest point of the turret. So you MIGHT be able to squeeze that swivel unloader over an even higher wagon_trailer than the turret since that downspout on the turret can't be dropped down into the trailer like the swivel can. You can also run the swivel unloader just an inch or two shy of fully extended to gain some precious height out at the end. Be careful though when doing this. We have unloaded into semi trailers that had tarp arches high enough that we had to drop the unloader between them - I doubt we could have done that with the turret. As the Great Bobby Greif says - "Turrets belong on tanks, not combines!"

I like the simplicity of the Gleaner unloader. Had to modify the swing cylinder to get it to stop a a higher point to use a grain cart. Still have to be very careful unloading on the go. It is poor for loading into tall trucks, unless you like shovelling or loading from both sides. have used a 1660 and 1666 this summer. Sure is nice to look DOWN into a truck! Sure won't bust the auger by swinging it in before it has completely shut off. Reaches across the grain cart superb. Give me the turret!

We have a turret auger. You talk about simplicty, the turret auger is simpler than it looks. We pulled the top unloding auger off in 30 mintues. however, our dearler says that on the massys, they have to replace the stort up auger every 2 years or so. But it is easy to do. my thoughs only

A little grease on the swivel auger and they are pretty much maintenance free. If you ever had to take one off they are very easy also. Curt

I like the old swivel best myself also. The swivels of today are not the same as the old days. They are higher and swing into saddle and out is dampened very nicely. They are made very heavy and have not saw any structural damage what so ever from folding in or out full of grain. A turret will catch a tree or pole just as easy as swivel. We have some guys install the long spout on the end of the swivel auger to get more reach into truck or cart. Even had a guy install an electric motor on the long spout so he could tilt up or down to fill truck very even on the fly. like another guy said the turret is noisy in the heavy crops. I would imagine the turrets will get quiter as gears wear in bit.
