Get, or better still, demand an adjustable pre-cleaner from JD. I finally got one in my 50 series after I initially ordered it with the machine from new - only took 12 months for the message to get through - the differance is amazing. I had untold trouble in rice, canola, beans etc. before fitting the adjustable pre-cleaner. In Europe the 9880 STS which runs the 12 litre motor like the 9860, has an adjustable pre-cleaner as standard. Why isn't it standard on all STS - it's got me. Obviously the engineers who "test" these machines before release must do so in corn (only) or they pressume that we and our customers are going to satisfied with a second rate sample and productivity.

We have the 9880 STS but it has no adjustable pre-cleaner - but we run with higher fan speed about 1200 then the sample is ok! shurely you have to open the chaffer and siever more too!

Adj precleaner is the icing to put on the cake. Agree with make. You can do a lot better even without the adj precleaner. Definately need more wind. It's pretty hard to blow grain out the back of an STS under load. lite crops and slow ground speeds are another story. If you can run near the capacity of the machine, an adj precleaner isn't as necessary. Should help tho. I have mine on order. Running as much returns as you are really hurts capacity of the machine. Do the vast majority of your cleaning with the chaffer. The sieve shouldn't do that much. Tailings should be kept to a minimum.

That whats I was trying to do. Clean with the chaffer and let everything through the seive. This is a 60 series am told you can not run the air as high as a 50 series because of bigger fan. I am at the upper range of the book recomendations. I will try higher speeds. Where do you get and adjustable precleanerIJ

You're right about the fan speeds on the '60 vs the '50. You may have to close down your chaffer a bit if you're already on the high end with fan speed. The grain loss monitors on my 9660 have proven to be very accurate. You might try to speed it up till you get some shoe loss, and then back off a little. Be sure and get out and confirm what the monitor is telling you. I've done that enough to be comfortable with mine. loewen makes an adjustable precleaner as well as deere. There's not much difference in price if you put the deere unit on a "stock" order and don't have to pay any freight. It will take as much as two weeks to come in on the stock order. If you're in a hurry and have to pay freight either way, you can save a few bucks with the loewen.

Did you ever try looking at the setting chartIJ With a top chaffer that tight you are probably dumping from the rear of the chaffer behind the wide-open sieve and into the tailings. Just to humor me and try a chaffer setting in the 16-18 range to allow the sieve to be used. You will most likely have to close the sieve down to the 6-9 range if the sample gets a little dirty. I realize this goes against logical thinking (high tailings open sieve and close chaffer),but I did this and it worked very well. Another consideration, do you have electronic shoe adjustIJ Make sure the indicated is the same as the true chaffer_sieve opening. Sometimes they can be quite different than what you think your machine is set at, mine was almost 6 off of what was indicated and needed to be recalibrated from the cab.

Thanks so much for convincing me that an adjustable pre-cleaner was the way to go. Obviously way too much material was going through the fixed pre-cleaner--not enough air blast to prevent this. I no longer have the chaffer losses as my limiting factor on my 9650 STS--they are very low in all conditions. What a difference!! Thanks a lot! STS's need an adjustable pre-cleaner. I set it about the same as the chaffer.
