I have many stages of steep pitch helicals installed in many machines. We're talking large P3s hear. I have never removed any steep pitch in favor of standard. Steep pitch all the way threw cage on large P3 basically copys the amount of turns the standard helicals do on small P3s only in a wider path. The most mild case transitions the 2nd helical from gearbox to dump onto triangle helical filler over feeder and you copy that mod to third helical. That mild case leaves the first helical from gearbox dumping back into center of concave. A step above that mild case is start at gearbox wall with steep pitch and line it up with helical filler across feeder. Start three more long steep pitch helicals in original starting positions of 2nd 3rd and 4th helicals and follow pattern of the first one you installed. Then you install short steep pitch next 4th with same gap as the other helicals. You remove as much of the normal pitch helicals that you need to to make room for steep pitch. This setup is what I would call full steep pitch for thresher side. This setup is best (short of steep pitch all the way threw) to prevent second pass over feeder and concave area. If you want to go further you just keep going with long steep pitch after the fourth on you installed. Just keep the same distance between the helicals as you go. There is no crop that I wouldn't want to run full steep pitch on thresher side. I don't switch out standard pitch on seperator in favor of steep pitch unless they are worn out and then I wouldn't hesitate to go full steep pitch for any crop I've been around. I'm finding these machines are getting more and more freindly to set between crops with these mods. We can switch from 15 pound per bushel grass to 60 pound wheat to 150 bu per acre corn with little more than concave gap and cylinder speed settings. Forget about the teardown between crops unless you realy want to specialize between crops. I'm sure you can follow the tips to get just the right setup for your mix of crops. We are doing crops we wouldn't even attempt 15 years ago and doing crops we were poor at with style with just a few mods. We've had to deal with tough and getting tougher conditions forever it seems so it was either adapt or die. So anyway don't be afraid to get started on the path to make an even better Gleaner. Have a great day.
