Combines The best conventionals

I'd second that. It's too bad they don't make a run of them again with just a few updates. I realise that there is a very limited market for smaller machines like an l3 but good old ones are starting to get hard to come by.

if they came back out with the 3 series combines with an update to take the newer headers at least the M3, and l3 questionable on the F3 i think they would sell more of these combines than they think heck i know i would be in debt forever i would order one right away but keep it simple like the old ones are put the cab of the new ones on it and a nice sisu engine and i think we would be good to go i and call them l5, M5, and F5 if they would make the F one i thnk it would really hit home for the small seed guys with fescue and clovers and such dairyfarmer

Just stick the new cab and a Sisu or Cummins on an l3, call it a C45, (Definitely price it reasonable),and you would have a great combine!

i bet there is a much larger market for l3s than A85s. Not alot of people have $300,000 for a combine.

I guess I am not really qualified to give an opinion having only worked with the l2 model for about 7 seasons before going onto the N's. But considering the period and the competition, ie mid 1970's onwards, the l2 _ l3's would have to rate as one of the best combines ever when capacity for size, reliability, simplicity, ease of maintenance and repairability are all taken into account. And you could even do a bit of fairly easy hyperising and get another 10% or 15% capacity out of them over the standard configuration.

I was at a meeting some years ago just before the C62 was released and the question was asked of a head engineer of ACGO "Why was the l3 not updatedIJ" as it was thought to have been a great machine. The engineer replied that they did not have the patent on the l series for a start, they thought it would cost too much to build for the capacity as well as they were trying to build a conventional on the rotary frame.

I don't think anyone realizes how many F-l size machines are still running every year. lots of 4 row machines left by me, a few two row and a few three row. When ever my K2 expires I will have to look for a 6 row machine I suppose, or maybe a nice F2 or F3. Our local Deere store is buying and reselling every 4420-4425-4435 they can get their hands on to serve their four row combine market in this area.

We still run an l3 next to our R60. Our's is in excellent condition and has been very good to us. The l3 is simple, has good capacity, and most of all easy to work on. Just wish it had a reverser. I'd say easily the best conventional Gleaner ever built.
