Combines tie rods

I have a 96 2166 and have broke that same tie rod end about every other year. If anyone would have any suggestions. I would appreciate it.

Bob, Don't know if you read my combine report on 11_30 toward the bottom of this page, but in that report I stated that we broke the left hand tie rod end on a 2388 when we were cutting in really muddy conditions. On that machine we had the back axle set out to the maximum to better track the front wheels. We moved the axle in one hole like our other machine was set at and did not have any more problems. Never had this problem yet. Does it only happens in muddy conditionsIJ I would think it could be a major problem if one broke while going down a busy road.Scary thought.

I have had the tie rod end break every couple years but always in the field when I was turning. If I remember right the conditions have never been muddy when it broke. As I think about it, the tie rod end has broke mostly after turning with it the steering completely against. I wonder if it binds when it comes against and cause it to flex.

we had this problem we put a larger stop bolt in we have slightly less turning radius but no one has complained about not turning and no more tie rod ends...we felt the wheel was turing to far and trying to pull harder on the rod end which in the end gave way....worked for us good luck

I think we must have different steering axles unless I am looking wrong. I don't have a stop bolt. the right side steering arm comes against a welded stop to limit how far the wheels turn. I could add a piece off flat iron to that stop so it wouldn't turn so short. I know when I turn short the steering cylinder is pulled in fairly tight to the axle.

The dealer adjusted toe in because ours was a horror to drive on the road. But he didnt check what effect this would have and we bent and then broke the tie rod shaft. One of the wheels ( i forget which ) was at nearly 90 degrees when turning and this is what caused the problem. When we added a little steel to the limit stop to prevent the wheel being on such an angle, the problem went away

my apologies..we added the stop bolt to stop the problem just an angle iron bracket with a bolt worked really well and cheap
