Combines TR or Massey

Never ran the massey. Nieghbor in this area traded one for a TR99. He is very happy. He had a lot of problems with the Massey Rotor and the dealer wdid not stockl any parts. Could be isolated case. I beleve the massey has a lot of capacity. The NH header reverser is the best on the market and the lateral floaat works very well. Usually comes down to best dealer.

Have run both TR99 and 8780 and 8780XP (current production MF) primarily in corn and soybeans. TR is a strong machine, particularly in beans, but won't harvest them when they're slightly green. NO rotary is as forgiving in green, weedy, or wet conditions as the Massey. So I would take the MF, especially since the MF is a more reliable combine, have seen official tests done on this subject as I would never own a TR out of warranty and the TR is a nightmare to work on. The Massey is the simplest, highest capacity class 6 combine out there, and with more power and tank capacity, could easily be a formidable class 7. I'd put my money on the Massey any day, even though the TR would be my third choice, right behind the Gleaner R62. My thoughts.

I am interested in a '98 model 8780. It has about 300 hours on it. I'm curious about what the difference is between this combine and the XP model. Is it just power or are there other improvements. looks like this combine is fairly similar to a 21_2388, only simpler design. Any thoughts on this comparison or experience between the two would be appreciated.

8780 has just the standard, mechanically governed 8.3l Cummins good for 260hp. The XP has the new QSC Cummins 8.3l diesel as used in the Gleaner R62 as well. It is new for 2000 model XPs and R62s and is rated at 285 hp with a power bulge up to 305 hp. Electronic governor control for improved fuel efficiency, better throttle response, and lower emissions. Also, '99 and later 8780s have the constant-speed rotor kit, an electronic gizmo that maintains rotor speed through varying loads of incoming crop. Some other updates as well, including XP has more reliable hyd oil alarm readout without any false warnings. Both good combines.

Go with the 8780_8780 XP or the 8570. I run a 8780 and a 8570 and both a very close in capacity. I had the fuel pump tuned on the 8570 and it keeps right up to the 8780. The massey rotary is simple and trouble free. I have run the 8570 for 9 seasons and 2500 hours and have only spent $1200 in repairs and maintainenance. This includes chopper blades and bearings. Many of my neighbours and friends own TR 98_99 and they do not keep them if they are not under warranty. I have seen people have to replace the ears at the front of the rotors and it is very costly. lots of guys try to get more capacity by tightening the stone trap, but when the rock goes through, $40000 is needed to fix it. In my experience 8780 is a simple, trouble free combine. I hope this helps
