Sounds like you need it rebuilt. With machine running, move your trans variable speed into the slowest setting. Shut off the machine in a level spot. Remove the fan screen that goes around the transmission. Jack up the machine near the frame on the left side of the transmission closed to where the head cylinder mounts. For safety, put wood blocks under the left front of the cylinder throat and have some ready to place under the left final drive after you remove the left drive wheel. Once the wheel is remove and the machine is blocked for stability proceed to trans. The clutch input shaft sheaves have outer and inner hubs that the sheaves bolt onto. The outer hub is held onto the tappered input shaft with a half moon key and a castle nut. This hub is usually in good shape. loosen the traction drive belt idler. Then you must remove the cotter pin and back off the castle nut on the input shaft but do not remove it. Place a puller onto the outer hub and let the castle nut stop it when it gives way. Once the outer hub is removed, then remove the drive belt and half moon key. A small chisel against the outer end of the key works for me. Check the inner hub for clearance. If worn it will be sloppy on input shaft. To remove it, unbolt the sheave from the hub (6 bolts). Don't loosen the stud fingers, the sheave will slide over them. Once the sheave is off, pull the inner hub and spring canister off input shaft. The inner hub and canister are connected with a bearing that usually needs replaced. Check it. New inner hubs cost about $220. The input shaft should not have any play in it. If it does, then you probably need a new shaft and 2 bearings that mount it to the clutch outer housing. This 19inch shaft usually cost $105.00 To remove it, unbolt the clutch outer housing bolts (8-10) and pull it loose from clutch transmission housing. It is heavy cause it contains the shaft, bearings, spacers, flywheel and clutch pack so have a helper close or use a support rope. The flywheel may need resurfacing which is not costly $35. Remove the snap ring on the flywheel then it will come off the input shaft's keyway. The clutch pack bolts on to it and cost about $92. To replace the bearings in the housing on the input shaft, you need a press. Remove the snap rings holding the bearings, then press off the old ones and press on the new ones. My experience is to replace the inner hub_orings_backup rings and its bearing, clean out the dirt in canister spring, replace the input shaft_orings and bearings, resurface the flywheel, replace the clutch pack, and replace the carrier bearing plus transmission cap input bearing. Don't forget to adjust your foot clutch after you reassembly everything. It sounds like a lot, but you will be happen with the results. No vibrations and smooth variable speed transitions that should last years.
