Ran mine with wheels reversed. Keeps mud off belts and out of way along side of machine. I had the weld on steering wheel axle break clean when it was loaded. I put them back in close. Since then , found there is a spacer to set tires out away from belts. Yes, I have mud shields by drive tires. About extension, easy to do in shop. Add a rod for power fold up. No sweat. Factory is a lot cleaner looking, but my shop time cost a lot less. Good luck.
