Pete, what you have done may seem ok, but it will not solve your problem. you need a couple cheap parts from gleaner. 2 of 71197202 or 71356060 bushings and maybe the pin that the bushings run on are all you need. after replacing them be sure and realign idler with adjustment bolts...........vstk

Thanks for the info. I inspected the bushing and the bolt and could not see any obvious wear on either one. The only thing I could find was that the bracket had side to side play even with the nut torqued down as tight as I could get it. The bushing stuck out just enough to allow the for the side to side play. Now the idler does not bounce around and the spring does not vibrate. I just hope that I do not have things too tight and cause something else to break. Time will tell I guess, if the spring does start hitting the pulley again I am going to try the suggestion to use the half spring and move the mounting plate. Even now with the spring not bouncing there is not a whole lot of room between the spring and the hydro pulley bolts, bad design all around. Pete

Alot of times you will not see any wear, it's a feel thing, get the new bushings and spacers and you will "see" "feel" what we are talking about-

i'm with you Pete on poor design. i just replaced bushes with new ones and still get clanging spring at certain revs. nowhere near as bad as before but still there.i was thinking i'd put a bit of poly pipe over spring and holding the spring across to the side a fraction. i hope you follow what i mean. bucko

bucko, Try check for side to side play with the nut as tight as you can get it and the spring as loose as you can without taking it off, if the bracket can slide from side to side you need to either shave a little off the bushing or put a spacer (washer) that has the ID large enough for the bushing to slide through so the nut can push against the spacer_bracket keeping it from moving from side to side which in my case was causing the spring to bounce around especially at high rpms. I combined 30 acres after I did this and the spring never made a noise. I also noticed that the idler is not bouncing on the belt anymore either. Pete Hinrichsen
