We have run and 8 row planter and harvested with a six row and very rarely do you ever get to wide of a bulk to harvest. Maybe once a season and you have to back up a few feet.

Consider going to gps guidance for planting straight corn rows. I have ordered the new Outback Guidance system which allows each pass to be straight independently from errors of the last pass. We know how longer marker errors magnify with each pass. I understand that you will plant straight enough to pull in with the combine any where without counting rows. It also allows you to plant contours by moving you over exactly one machine width from the first curving pass. Over hills expect the extra width to show up as wider than the normal row as it is more feet across the hill than it is across the flat. like wise use it to spread fertilizer, spray and drill.look at outbackguidance.com.

The only guidance systems I've seen much do well to keep it within 15" to 30". Only the super high dollar ones with the antenna on the farm seem to be any better and the jury is out on it. We've spread fertilizer with guidance for years and it works, but you want much more than 5" of difference harvesting off rows. Go with a twelve row CH and be done with it.
