Combines Variable drive pulley splines stripped

Nelsoncat: I have run into 2 combines with this problem this year. I would say yes you should replace the separator jackshaft. On both units I saw the spacer that the front sheave slides on was also wrecked. In fact both had to be cut apart. On the newer 1600 series this was changed to a stronger set up (spacer has spline in it and bolts to rear sheave). There is a serial number break on the 1400 series also so watch that. The jackshaft cast mount is completely different. If yours is an above SN and you can locate a newer style 1600 series set up for a reasonable price that would be the way to go.

I plan on taking apart my 1480 with the same problem. I noticed the stationary drive pulley has some pretty good play with the shaft. I was wondering if it was splines or a key way. After reading this post I took a look in my parts book and it's splines. I wonder if you could just get the the pulley's splines machined out and a new sleeve with spines pressed back inIJ I've this done before on other applications when the splines were a common size. I'll have to take it off and see how its made. Hopefully the shaft splines aren't too bad yet.
