I didnt have any trouble with the l_M series combines I had. Do you clean and lubricate the spring and ramps or whatever those 3-eared things are calledIJ I dont recall if the operators manual or the shop manual cover the steps you have to follow but cleaning is relatively easy and doesnt take a lot of time to do it right.

Someone didn't tighten the nut up in the first place and that is why you found it loose. Belt is self tentioning as long as you have it adjusted to have .100" gap between the front sheaves with varible slowed all the way. If you have it set and nothing is broke or assembled wrong in spring can it will not slip. Make sure large washer next to retaining nut is not bottomed against shaft our you will be looking for more trouble. Nut and washer needs to be crimping varible tight against shaft bearing to keep everything in proper compression. These varibles are rock solid if they have been properly over the years and no one has just tightened the nut with a clunk of a hammer against the end of an adjustable wrench. Good luck with your project.
