I went out the bottom with mine. Used a Walker air type bumper jack and a wood post to carry it down far enough to attach a come along to lower it the rest of the way. Close tolerance to the drive tire, but she squeeked by. Cut the old flighting off, welded on new flighting. Removed only the bottom bolts around the boot.

when you went back together did you have any trouble getting the splines line up_timedIJ how does the gearbox attach to the bottom of the auger itselfIJ

There weren't splines, just a square drive with a pin and cotter key at the top, and the bottom is square too. Nothing actualy holds the auger to the gear box at the lower end. I have the early style open gears.

Did our 1660 the same way, out the bottom in the same maner (we used a basement jack) and the come-along. Took a little bit of persuasion, but it came out and went back up with not too much trouble. We have the open gears as well, they will last long, grease them every 10 hours and put graphite on the gears (lubricates but keeps dust off!). This may be a good time to "beef up" this auger with poly, heavy duty auger, or hard surface, etc. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

well i got it done i tied a rope to hold the auger up thru the inspec hole at the top then went down and took the bolts loose on the bottom. i have the later style so its kinda heavy with the gearbox and all. at the top mine had splines too. to go back it took some muscle and some help but still the best way i think than taking all that stuff loose on top.
