Combines volt gauge IJ on 1480

It sure does sound like the alternator by the symtoms you give. Either that or possibly a shorting battery. Try blowing it out with compressed air and see what happens. If you have to run right now, and have an old chevy pickup sitting around, just take the alternator off of it and swap pullies. Any old delco will work to get by. They're in stock at most any parts house so even on sunday you should be able to find something to get you going.

luckly we are good friends w_one of the parts guy at the store, and i managed to get one yesterday. Put it on this morning and all seemed fine, then i looked over and saw that the freakin gauge was right back down w_the idiot light on...Then guy came to service AC, and checked the alt and said it was charging at like 13-14volts at 1500rpm. Then tonight i was checking some stuff over and saw that my red connection at the rear solenoid was bit loose, looked tight but could move the nut w_my fingers. Didnt have my pickup w_me so no tools. Ill tighten it up in the morning, and see if maybe be loosing, it was constantly connecting and breakin power, causing the gauge to go back and forth in the cab...just a guess... One other IJ is, the alt has 3 prongs for wires. Ive only got 2 wires back there(on 1-2). By reading the manual i should have another for the odd ball terminal and they should be 2 tans and a black_red i think...Curious as to everyone elses setupIJ

The third terminal if it is in the same spot as 1 and 2 is for a tach connector. Mine has it but I don't use it everything seems to work fine without it. If you are worried any alternator repair shop can added this terminal as a wire out the side which is connected to one of the three diode terminals internal of the alternator. Weapon

Yep. If the combine only has 2 wires, then the 3rd one on the alternator can be left unconnected without any problems. Tha tach sender on the 1480 should be over on the left side of the machine and it reads the notches on the pulley between the pto housing and the hydrostatic pump. If any wires are loose, especially loose enough to turn the nut by hand, then it could very well cause these type of problems. Batteries that short a plate will also cause problems similar in nature.
