Combines Walker loss factors in a conventional

One huge factor is the concave that you have. The earlier C62s had a narrow spaced concave that did not allow enough grain to pass through and would overload the walkers. later, Gleaner introduced them with the wide-spaced wires. look at your concave and make sure your wires are spaced at about 1.5" on-center. That should be the wide-spaced (preferred) version. If they are more like 1", then I know I have cut every other wire out to get to 2" spacing, which is fine in corn and beans, but you might have to use a row or two of filler bars in hard-thresh grains. The wider space bars make a world of difference in walker loss. Do you have the walker risers installedIJ Positioning of these is critical as well. Third possibility is speeding up the beaters behind the cylinder, both of them. I didn't keep the part number, but there was a pulley and belt you could replace on the beater drive to spin them faster; that helped quite a bit as well in the small grains. I don't think there were too many of the C62s sold, but the one I was around impressed me; sure was better than a 9610 JD.

Harvester, Thanks very much for the info..the concave is actually the first place I had planned to investigate as soon as it gets a bit warmer out to work on it. I suspect I may have the narrow spacing..also I think that the front of the concave may be plugged up with crap (old corncobs, mud etc.) which wouldn't help matters any. I actually removed the risers this fall thinking that they may have been contributing to loss, carrying the straw out too fast but didn't notice any improvement. Would be interested in what the proper spacing is for them as I plan to reinstall them before I start the wheat next summer.

As I recall, they should start about 3-4' behind the front of the walkers and end within about 2' of the back of the walkers. Between this area, they should be evenly spaced. The longer the straw, the fewer you should need and use, as too many will produce the same effect as having none at all - the straw will simply bridge the risers and you won't get the desired tumbling action. The walkers are shorter than in some other machines, so early separation at the concave is important on the C62. Happy harvesting with a fine machine.

Thanks Harvester..I appreciate your insight..there aren't a lot of people on this board running C62_8680's. I will let you know how I make out with the concave. I've been running the C62 for 5 years now and despite a lot of reliability problems when she's working good it's hard to beat the old girl for capacity and sample quality.
