Combines wastegate again

If your running with a 8.3 liter Cummins I would have thought that 25 to 27 lbs would be about right! you can get 30 lbs on a cool night. First check that your high idle is at 2420 rpm's with everything running but empty! and fuel and air cleaners all clean, then when your running in the crop you should be running at around 2260 to 2320 RPMs at 25 to 27 lbs boost! you should be able to sense when the machine falls off the power curve!! the Rev's will just fall away!!!! Now if the beeper is doing its thing you might want to take the electronic box out of the steering wheel and I think there's an adjustment on it there somewhere that you can then set the beeper to go off at the revs you want. You could try by engaging you front and combine then adjust the revs to 200 rev's below your high idle and then adjust the screw to turn the beeper just on!!! I think I make sense!!! let us know how you get on Rolf

the diaphram on the wastegate actuator may be leakingand will not allow aneroid valve on injection pump to allow proper fueling. an easy check is to disconnect hose at wastegate actuator and install a 1_4" bolt in hose and clamp it. if you have more hp then check waste gate acuator diaphram. have had 3 units with this problem.

I had the same problem last fall..turned out to be a hole in the diaphragm..thanks to NDDan for diagnosing it. Had to go to Cummins to get the actuator...wasn't cheap..I think it was around $250 Cdn.

How long can you run the combine with wastegate disconnectedIJ If I watch the boost gauge and not let it get over 26-27, can I run it that way until I get the wastegate fixedIJ Thanks for the help

I finished off the corn harvest last fall with the waategate adjusted open. The lack of power you are experiencing is due to the air leak in the line going to the fuel pump. I found that running with the wastegate tied open had no effect on performance...actuallu not really sure why this application of the cummins engine needs a wastegate. It is alsways running at high idle. Maybe NDDan can comment on this.

Disconnected hose from T going to wastegate. What a combine. It was like we added another motor. Dad was actually in 3rd gear and didn't even realize it. Now the boost ran 25-28 psi, but we hooked it back up because I didn't want to do any damage. My question is, will the combine run like that once we fix the problem, or will the wastegate take a little away when it is working properly, and can we run safely with the wastegate disconnected if we watch the boost gauge, until we get a new one. Also is a wastegate a wastegate, or does cummins have to special order oneIJ Thanks for all the help

Wastegate won't take anything away when operating properly. It's the wastegate diaphram that was taking something away because it was leaking off the signal from intake manifold so fuel pump aneroid limited fuel pump output. Bring turbo and engine numbers with you when you order up new control for there are tons of applications. The proper control will cut excess boost only. The reason your boost was down is because fuel flow was limited not because turbo was waisting boost. New control will likely dump boost between 24 and 26 PSI but it won't have a leaking diaphram so fuel pump aneroid will allow full pump flow. Good luck
