The main advantage of the wastegate is quicker response at lower rpms as the turbo is smaller and gets to spinning faster, quicker which equals more boost at lower rpms. At rated rpm, it will develop too much boost so they have a wastegate dump some of the exhaust away from the turbo. As you can see, it would be a good advantage in a truck application. In a combine, it ensures that you have maximum boost more of the time. Kelly
