Combines water pump bearing

It is very important that you get alignment on the bearing correct for it too last. We stand the head upright in our shop whenever we do a rebuild on the snapping rollers. That way the guys can tighten the end piece down and make sure that the roller can be moved up and down freely and is not binding the bearing before tightening up the set screw. The last step is to set the knife spacing.

Do you go by a measurement to get you close or do you go by when you get endplay only and is this where the 1-13_16 come into playIJ Is there some guide or rule of thumb about how many shims to addIJ Thanks for your help.

There is not any guideline for shim ammount. It will vary from row to row. We find some row unit frames that are not perfectly straight anymore and will take varying amounts of shims to get the brg. aligned. Don't worry about the spacing between the rollers. Just loosen the knives and set gap after you get the brg. aligned and the set screw locked down. Be sure and loctite the set screw.

So i should not worry to much about stalk roll spacing, but endplay in bearing.As long as the stalk roll moves freely at all four sides set screw then move blades to get 1_32 gap between blades. Is this 1_32 gap not to close or do you need it to do a good job.

The close knife spacing will do a good job cutting up the stalks and pull them down through during operation.

I have a problem with knife gap. I have to shim so far out to get end play that my knifes touch. I've pushed my knives apart as far as they will go and they still touch. What is wrongIJ I'm i shimming to far outIJ Help.!!

You don't need to shim so far out. This job is alot easier if the head is upright so you can use a pry bar to push up and down on the snapping roller to see if the brg. is able to freely move in the support. Are you using different amounts of shims under the three bolts to align the supportIJ For example, add an extra shim under the front bolt to move the support over a little. This really isn't too difficult to do when the head is upright, but I have had customers try and do it with the head on the combine. It can be done, but more often than not, they don't get it right and soon have brgs. start to fail.

I started yesterday morning and after doing one and going throught trail and error i figured out how to do it. Your right just add a couple shims on the bottom and take a bar and ease up on the roller you may have to take a big screw driver and widen the top out were the shims go to get it to come up, then you add shims to top as needed. check all four sides then set gap in blades.I finised all six rows yesterday evening took about 10 hours.
