For the money a late N5_6 (83 or newer) from a good home would probably be the best bang for your buck. I would also pencil in the cost of a minimal hyper of the rotor. P3 stars in the seperator, add two more discharge paddles, removal of the reverse bars, stacked helicals in thresher end and two F2 rasp bars in the belly of the seperator (~$1500 for parts). If you have any kind of mechanical skill you can do this yourself with the help of the Hyper Mods section. Sound like allot of work but it really isn't. Good luck in what ever you decide, Pete Hinrichsen

We ran l2 for 18 yrs. then went with R50 in 2001. with mods it is a smooth running machine. Plus it is so much easier to work on compared to l2

I went from a '76 l to a '88 R60, just finished 2nd harvest. Well pleased with performance, but need to do some of the hyper mods to help out. Price was right at an auction, and I knew the fellow retiring. I have a neighbor with a '85 N6 and 30' header, looking for $8000. Its a good runner. He musta fell on his head, bought a low hour 9600.... ;-) He liked the N and likes his JD but does admit the N has the advantage in quick fixing.
