For trucks, how do locking differentials with only one switch work? What are the limitations?

You lock it to get traction if you're stuck. As the name suggests both wheels on the axle are locked together. One will not turn faster or slower than the other. For going straight only. If you make a turn the truck will hop as the differential is not functioning to allow one wheel to turn faster than the other.
