you have the most experience!, the late black heads were lower profile and higher speed. I remember adding a Gleaner kit to a corn head one time around '78 to adapt a FG 630 to a M2. Pretty big job best I can remember. The only big problem with the orange heads was keeping the double sprocket on the snapping roll shaft TIGHT. The cross chain was out of sight so out of mind. When worn it really whipped on the sprockets. I had about as soon have a really nice orange head as a early black one. The later series with low tin and long snouts were better though .

The orange heads are worth scrap iron price. If the head does what you want you might as well keep running it untill something major goes out. A good A630 head will cost $4,000 and up. The main problem I had with the orange head(mine was made in 1975} was keeping the double drive sprockets tight on the snapping rolls. It seemed like every ten hours or so they would get loose and once they get loose and the nut comes off the sprocket will tear up the threads.

Studandbearing mount loctite on sprocket splines and nut then torqued really tight will nearly elimanate that problem.Keep chains adjusted and lubed.Keep grease in gear boxes and grease snapping roll bearings regularly.Keep an eye on roll blade bolts-a poor design with short fine thd screwed into AlUMINUM blocks.You can tack weld them to each other.If you ever try to replace them you may not get bolts to hold.Better to splatter some weld down edges to get feeding back(my experience).If you look at a black head be sure to check cross shafts for missing lock collars which means shafts have most likely been floating and are worn and will not hold a new bearing_lock collar.Top shaft is notorious(from neglect)for loosening bearing blocks which destroys threads in castings and also eats up splined drive end and coupler.All parts are pricey.It's a shame the way too many farmers take care of their equipment!Just my experience.

Are you sure it isn't a lM 630 headIJ They were orange and I had one on my M2.The heads were made up untill 1976.If you replace back bearings once in a while and locTite them to the shaft,keep rear nuts tight and keep chains and guide blocks in good shape and tight,you should not have much trouble.I did thousands of acres with orange heads with very few break downs.

the only thing wrong with the orange heads....they are old!! i've run the old heads on my gleaners for 20 years, they are cheap to buy, and easy to work on if you have to. i haven't had hardy any trouble with mine, just regular maintance like anything else. just my .02
