Went through the same anxiety with my Versatile 500 a few years ago (not for the imminent retirement reason, though). Pulled the engine and lugged it over to TTP,Inc in Warsaw Indiana for a rebuild. Running well. Sure saved me a lot compared to Cummins Canada's price to repair. TTP might have a 649 or 670 engine on the shelf. Good luck.

Depending on what has been torn up_worn out in the 649I it is going to cost a minimum of $5000 or so to rebuild it. And if the crankshaft has been damaged, replace it with a new or non ground crank(they break easily at that HP after grinding). That engine was used in the M2_3 and l2_3 and might be worth your time to find a salvage yard engine. The 7020 also used that engine but minor modifications need to be made to use it. I personally had a 7020 with an M3 engine, which was turn out over 150 hp. Depending on how long before retirement, good used or TTP rebuild and the price for each would narrow down your options. When my M2 engine went bad I replaced it with a 5.9 cummins. The 5.9 rated 160 hp @2500 rpm. It fit in the original 301 A.C. mounting frame but is 3 in. shorter. this requires a fan hub extenstion -stock part used on a C.I.H. tractor and stub pto bolted to crank pulley to drive hyd. pump. 5.9 cummins available at auto wreckers out of Dodge truck or new from New Equipment Company 52579 College line RR 4 Aylmer Ontario Canada N5H 2R3 Fax 519 765 2183.
