When buying calves

I'd avoid buying calves from feedlots, no matter how young they are. Feedlots are stressful for cattle and the dam has been consuming antibiotics, corn, and other additives. That's not healthy for the calf. Calves from feedlots are affordable options, but you run the risk of buying a hot calf which will die anyway. Usually your best bet is to buy a bottle calf directly from a farmer or from an auction that has been allowed to nurse from its dam for at least a few days. The colostrum in the milk is highly beneficial for the calf and gives a big advantage towards health. What do you consider when buying calves?
