Combines Which is best CDC Cummins or IH 466

I get the impression that the Cummins is kind of loafing at the factory HP. If you want to turn up the pump, it would probably be the way to go. As for the high RPM, is there any way you could convert to the lower RPM by switching some sheaves or somethingIJ Or, maybe that's just not feasibleIJ

Cummins engine is far superior to the DT466 IH engine. More torque, more capacity, and you can turn it up, you dont need that high RPM

I always liked the 466. Better fuel econ than the CDC for sure. I think you'd have to change much more than the engine to swap from one to the other though.

Own a 1984 1480 (466) and a 1993 1688 (8.3 cummins). The 1480 has 4823 hrs and has never been touched other than a water pump at 4700 hrs. Actually uses less oil (1qt_100hrs) than the cummins (2qts_125hrs). The cummins motor had the water pump replaced at 2000hrs, bad injector at 2200hrs and was told should be underhauled by at least 3500hrs(may have been serviceman looking for business though). My view, the DT466 is a rock solid engine. I can also back this up by running a IH1486 tractor for 8000hrs with no engine problems.
