So far as I know, the only North American Massey with a Benz engine was the Claas built 8450 and 8460.

But why the early warranty engine swap outIJ That is what has me so perplexed. I don't remember the brand they replaced it with but it wasn't a Benz, and that is what seems so strange.

I don't know why they would have replaced a Benz with another engine. Claas has been (and continues to) run Benz engines in their combines to this day. Also, the Claas built Massey's were entirely conventional combines; - no rotaries under the North American Massey label were ever Benz engines (Perkins and Cummins).

Could of this been some sort of proto typeIJ Because it was a rotary and it did come from the factory with the Benz diesel. I do remember that it was getting a lot of attention by the Massey people before the engine change and it was at pretty much a 30 yr AC shop that was just getting into Massey before his death. The Gleaners still were running the Deutz engines at that shop and he had engineers in from Germany_Benz talking about and comparing both engines.

Anything is possible, but I highly doubt it would be anything from Massey which would have been North American built. Perhaps it was from Massey's Dronningborg plant!

Could it have been Class's version of the rotary the CS 114,116.They came with the V6 and V8 M.B. motor. The CS had a series of seperating cylinders. john

Explain more as it was about 10 yrs ago and this almost sounds like the machine, but why the quick motor change out and did that machine use any other engines. The MB V8 does jog my memory as the engine they pulled and it was a Massey Rotary marking. It did look abit like a Claas now that you mention it.

Massey had an engine campaign sponsered by Merceded Benz on 8460's in about 1991. The problem was the bolts that retain the counter weights to the crankshaft. Every machine within a serial number range had a mandatory rework. These were done by a team of two technicians who came in from Claas and Mercedes. They pulled every engine and reworked the weights at no cost to the Dealer other than to use their shop space. These were on the 8460 with the V-6 engine only.

My understanding, though, is that the 8460 was a conventional Claas, not a rotary, and Massey never marketed the rotary Claas, which was known as the CS (or Cylinder System) series.
