The 9860 has a 12.5l and the 9760 has the 8.1l. The 12.5l is a much larger engine than the 8.1l and weighs more.

My 2 cents, In Europe during late 90's in our heavy straw and higher moisture crops the Claas 480 was "smoking" every other combine put up against it.JD tried to counter act this by introducing the 465hp 9880sts in 2002.Because of all the talk on these boards and the internet in general about "biggest combine etc" JD was "forced" due to market demand to introduce the 9860sts along with the rest of the 60 series.I believe that the 9760 would have as much performance as any operator will need in N.America and is a helluva cheaper to boot!!! Claas has now carried on the "horsepower" challenge by introducing the(world record holder harvesting 1080 tons of wheat in 15 hours!!) massive 512hp 580 lexion,it will be interesting to see if "market forces" get it to bring it to N.America.

If hp is an issue, running an 8.1 at peak power is going to be hard on it in the long run. Bigger engine running at low power should last longer than small engine running to the max. Havn't there been problems with 9750_60's with engine problems (crankshafts and such)IJ Also, 9860 has a bigger number on the side when you drive it up town at night...I hear the girls love it....

sounds great that 1080 tons the lex made somewhere in britain! I must say that i was in Hannover at the agritechnica and was wondering how the 580 is able to bring the material into the hopper because it has the same elevator than the 480. We had a 480 until last year an always big problems with the elevator which always was the limit of this combine in corn. (only with an 8row headder) I must say Claas or Cat just made the same as JD with the 60 series just more horsepower and they did not remove the problems as it should be. I can only lough when i hear of this 1080 tons!!!

Yes you are right the sieves didnt do a great job - that was the second reason to slow down the speed! And the third problem was that in really wet conditions (wheat or barley) the two tines were not able to seperate the corn from the straw!!! We have bought last winter the 9880 STS (european version with 465 hp 30f headder) and i must say that it is a really great pleasure to drive this combine! I would say the STS is able to let about 25% more material through with the same losses!!! What I can not believe until today is how this small sieves area can do this great jobIJ
