The 2188 generally has a good reputation, but when you do hear about a lemon it is usually a '95 model. I would pay more for a '97 to get the stronger axles and would avoid a '95 just to be on the safe side. Have you seen this siteIJ

my personal experience is that '95 2188 models are the ones which give little problems, like feederhouse-chain-bars breaking, axles breaking, grain-tank sagging and so forth. most of these niggles, however, seem to have been ironed out in later year-models.

For what ever it's worth- my 1688 operators manual says it has 260HP and it acts like it. lots of power!

thanks everyone, and especially "FarmKid2" for the very helpful websites. I'm pretty much sold on the CaseIH machines for durablility_simplicity. Are they going to keep making the 2300 series even though they have that big (ugly in my opinion) 8010 on the market nowIJ I hope they don't discontinue the axial flows.

Glad to help with the sites. I've found them quite helpful. I know you're thinking about newer machines, but you might check this link out. I think that a '92 1680 might be one of the best values out there, especially one equipped like this one.

your right it was the 88 series that went to the larger turbo and air cleaner 1688 and 2188 had 260-265 if you think yours has a lot of power we installed a torque capsule on our 2188 it makes the governor more sensative made all the difference in the world
