we bought our first 643 deere to run on a l2 gleaner that was bought with no head at auction, then after it blew it's motor,we went to a N5 gleaner that came with 8 row head{we plant 12} so we put deere head on that machine, it wore out in 1999 so we bought 1680 and put it on this, our current machine. also aftermarket parts are cheap and plentiful. we figure it has harvested 14000 acres for us with very little repair

less parts per row , you can weld up the rolls , I'll agree the Deere doesn't chew the stalks up as much as the CIH but that isn't a problem for me , cattle run on a lot of mine . There are 3 Deere heads on CIH within a mile of here , they are all happy . I'm running a '78 643 on a 1660 , bought it on my 7700 , also used it on a UNI to pick seedcorn . I never did buy a set of rolls , just weld them up every 3-4 years , put new chains on reverse the sprockets and go . Biggest problem I've had it that famous gear that goes out in the gearbox , been through 4 of them .
