JD switched and put out 12-fin (I think) tailboards on 2003 models (around April) and had_have a retrofit kit. Our dealer in WC Indiana replaced all of the ones for people that requested it. It works!!! The cost is about $400 I think, but you may be able to work out a deal with your dealer.

He is saying that he has JD spreaders. The tailboard update is for combines with choppers. I don't know what crops you have but if you are going to no-till I would suggest getting rid of the spreaders and put a chopper on the combine. May cost a few dollars now but it will more than pay for itself in the future. Without it your're going to have a lot of headaches with residue. My neighbor had a custom combiner with spreaders. Harvested lentils, peas and durum. That was two years ago and he is still trying to get the ground straightened out. He no-tills. He ended up taking his combine and pickup header over the pea and lentil ground to grind up the residue. I have a 9750 with chopper and love it. Thanks. When we purchased the 9750 last fall we were told the spreader was not needed but the rotary would chop everything up adequately. Also that the chopper h.p. requirement was high. After what little wheat I have cut I can see that the chopper might be needed. We are mainly dryland and have a fallow period so I'm sure we can deal with our residue. Does the chopper on a 9750 do better than the chopper on a 9600IJ About what does a chopper costIJ

chopper cost is about $8400. We traded our spreader for a chopper when the machine was new and paid about $4000 difference. The chopper is not ideal on the STS because it is only held on by 2 bolts and the hydraulic cylinder. The chopper fell off once and did about $2500 damage to the machine and chopper. If you turn the fans up to run faster it will do a better job of spreading. If you can live with the spreader at all I recommend it. We are in the custom harvesting business and perception is such that we have to run choppers for our customers but they are expensive to keep up and work over the rear of the combine pretty bad. Have the most trouble in the delta where ditches in the fields are common to let the water drain. Had to completely rebuild the rear end on one machine and they seem to take constant watching to keep all bolts tight. gben.
