Combines Wire Modification

low wire sep grates as in R40-50's need to have every other wire removed on thresher and sep grates. We are in soft red winter wheat area and have no problem. We do run one or two filler bars though. If one opens the access door and finds the wires plugged with cobs it is necessary to dewire the grate as in remove every other rod. This is not an easy task on the sep grate on early R's, I torched mine out. Really helps in high moisture corn to prevent cylinder loss. No adverse effects on wheat. I have heard of overloading the shoe in drought condiditons where stems broke up severly. We have not experienced this.

Thank you for your advice. What do you refer to as "filler bars"IJ What are they and where do you put them. We do not run high moisture corn, but I take it that it is still a necessary modification. You mentioned it being necessary to remove every other rod in the grate. This is the entire lower 180 degrees except for the concaveIJ Also in the Hyper Mods picture am I mistaken or does it show one of these very bars that should be removed left in next to the feeder houseIJ Is it necessary to leave this bar in, or is just showing left in versus being taken out. What about cuting every other cross bar loose, sliding it up, and welding it to the next oneIJ Does this need to be doneIJ Have you done thisIJ Thanks for the help tbran. Ryan

Filler bars or more accurately plates are plates with studs welded to them to block off the spaces between the threshing grate thus giving the cylinder more agressive threshing action by not letting grain fall through the first grate opening and require it to pass over the next cross bar. We run one all the time and as many as necessary to prevent 'white capping' in soft red winter wheat. Up to 4 or 5 may be necessary in clover or lespedesa. We remove every other wire in all low wire (1_2" spaced) grates, both lower and upper thresing grates and separator grates. I have not moved the cross bars personally so can't comment on this as others have.

By the way you word it, I take it that this is a homemade itemIJ Is there a picture of one in the hyper mod section, for I haven't seen itIJ Okay, so all wires get removed save the concave wiresIJ Thanks, Ryan
