How do you use Irish Spring soap as rat repellent? How effective is it? Do you see immediate results?

How do you use Irish Spring soap as rat repellent? How effective is it? Do you see immediate results?

I've never used Irish Spring, but I have used moth balls. Tossing them into rat holes or into place where you've seen rats does keep them away.
